Can You Pour a Concrete Slab After Your Metal Building Is Installed?

One of the most common questions we hear is whether a concrete floor can be added after a metal building has already been installed.

The good news is yes—it absolutely can. Many customers choose to install their building first and pour the concrete later, whether it's to spread out the cost or because their concrete contractor isn't ready yet.

The Base Rail Is Installed on the Ground

Our buildings are built with a 2½-inch square steel tubing base rail that is installed directly onto a properly prepared and compacted surface. The building is securely anchored during installation, allowing you to add a concrete floor later.

Preparing for the Concrete

If you're pouring a standard 4-inch concrete slab, the ground inside the building will typically need to be excavated about 1½ inches. This allows the finished slab to sit flush with the top of the base rail, letting the steel base rail act as the outside form for the concrete.

Your concrete contractor should ensure the ground is properly prepared and compacted before pouring.

Don't Pour Above the Base Rail

The finished concrete should not be poured above the top of the steel base rail.

Keeping the concrete flush with the base rail helps prevent moisture from becoming trapped against the steel tubing, which can lead to unnecessary moisture issues over time.

Use a Vapor Barrier

Before the concrete is poured, install a vapor barrier over the prepared ground. A vapor barrier helps reduce moisture from migrating through the concrete slab and is an important part of a quality concrete installation.

Protect the Walls Before Pouring

Concrete splatter can permanently stain or damage painted metal panels.

Before the concrete truck arrives, cover the lower wall panels with plastic, cardboard, or another protective material to help keep wet concrete off the walls. Taking a few extra minutes to protect the building will help keep it looking new after the job is complete.
